The IMI Colloquium Report in November 12, 2025

November 19, 2025

Title: Identifying and solving problems in the media

Date: Wednesday, 12 November 2025 16:45 - 17:45

Place: IMI Auditorium(W1-D-413) and Live streaming with Zoom

Speaker: Yuichiro Yasui (Nikkei Inc.)

Attendance: 18(Students: 8 ; Staff: 6 ; Others: 4)

At this colloquium, the speaker gave a lecture entitled “Identifying and solving problems in the media”. The speaker first gave an overview of the investigative journalism support, business support for various fields, and new business development that his organization provides, and then introduced numerous case studies of his work in organizing and reconstructing the various issues he receives from various departments and presenting solutions.
For the problem-solving, a wide range of mathematical expertise is important, and appropriate methods are required depending on the problem: for example, applying methods of the time series analysis techniques to detect trends, utilizing mathematical optimization to design work shifts, and introducing graph theory to organize data and build a knowledge system. Hearing about these many practical examples of how mathematics is greatly useful in solving problems was a very important opportunity for researchers and students in the field of mathematics. There was a lively question and answer session, and discussions continued even after the colloquium ended, demonstrating the high level of interest among the participants.
