Title: Cryptographic Standardization and Mathematics: Notes from Standardizing Pairing-Friendly Curves

Abstract:
Before a cryptographic technique comes into everyday use, there is one more stretch of road to travel after the paper. It has to be written down so that anyone who implements it arrives at the same result, and agreed upon among people around the world. This is the work of standardization.
In this talk, I will introduce this work through the standardization of pairing-friendly curves at the IETF. As we write a specification down to its finest details, we come across a variety of practical questions. I will take up several of them, such as how to keep the size of the data small. Finding answers to such questions calls once again for mathematics. I would like to share how this unfolds, along with what actually happened in our discussions. The draft specification is now approaching its final stage. I hope to show you a specification in the very process of taking shape.
