The IMI Colloquium Report in October 14, 2026
November 4, 2026
Title: Cryptographic Standardization and Mathematics:Notes from Standardizing Pairing-Friendly Curves
Place: IMI Auditorium(W1-D-413) and Live streaming with Zoom
Speaker: Yumi Sakemi(GMO Connect, Inc. / GMO Internet Group, Inc.)
Attendance: 34(Students: 14; Staff: 14;Others: 6)
Summary of Lecture:
In this talk, the speaker discussed the following topics regarding cryptographic standardization and mathematics:
* The concept and necessity of standardization (de jure/forum/de facto standards, and the Great Baltimore Fire example).
* An overview of the IETF and the process of developing RFCs.
* Technical challenges in standardizing pairing-friendly curves and their mathematical solutions.
The speaker emphasized that mathematics is essential for solving practical technical challenges in standardization, such as elliptic curve point compression and the arithmetic and representation of extension fields.
This talk highlighted the importance of international standardization beyond academic publications and demonstrated how mathematics helps solve real-world technical challenges.
